Thank you for a very useful site on the little border villages. As some of my tree is in places like Newton Regis and Polesworth, it is more than possible that offshoots moved to villages like Sheepy and Ratcliffe. Are you planning to develop this to extend up to Norton juxta Twycross and Orton on the Hill?

I very much enjoyed your site. I spent many nights in the church in 1974 and 1975, filming barn owls. I lived in Shenton and worked at MIRA at the time. The film was used in the first series of BBC Wildlife on One. I have been filming wildlife ever since, but Ratcliffe Culey church was the start of it. I loved that place. The church was almost disused at the time. I built scaffolding up inside the nave, up to the little window going into the tower. There was a huge wytch elm in the churchyard. It died of Dutch elm disease despite being innoculated.

My fathers' family originated in England, however, the earliest I can retrace is an Ed Parsons, born in the 1800's in Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland. The men in this family married women in the Pond, Hoyles and Butler families. If you should happen to come across these names in your search would you please contact me at the address below, I am trying to gather information for my dad. I am grateful for any assistance that anyone can provide to me. I did have an uncle Wilfred Parsons that was in the Navy during the last WW, he was killed on a mine sweeper. He left behind a young bride, however I do not know her name, or if there were and children involved. Good luck in your search!

Hi, Annette Reed again! I am amazed by this site and have just read all the comments.PLEASE NOTE ANYONE WHO READS THIS! As Vicar, I can honestly say that All Saints is NOT disused and abandoned. We hold regular services and events and are hoping to upgrade the facilities in the church in the near future so that the church can be used by the whole community. We have just restored the George 111 Royal Arms and are making great improvements in the churchyard. Many people love this little church and it is now very well cared for. We constantly need funds to further our work on the building - and if anyone would like to make a donation great or small, please do contact me - many thanks!

Hi, Martyn. Look like its a case of " man at work" on the Sheepy update - wait with anticipation. I've had some fascinating geneological info today on the FELL family of Sheepy who were Rectors here from the mid 1700's - a whole FELL tree no less from a descendant. Any FELLs out there? Also geneological info on the CHOYCE family from Sibson/Twycross - both these came as a result of articles in The Church Times about Sheepy Church and the Fell vault newly uncovered.Keep up the good work. Very interested in the Parsons side of your family. My father came from London but had connections with Tortworth in Gloucestershire. I was a Parsons before I married. My Grandfather was Hugh Leonard Parsons who had a daughter - Winifred and twin sons Reginald Maurice (my father) and Hugh Leonard. Grandfather had fallen out with his father but we know there was a Christopher and an Annie Parsons connected with Deal. I have just started trying to tie up this side of the family as we know very little about them. Rosemary Hill (nee Parsons) Rosejean@dialstart.net

Heres a date for Sheepy Magna and Parva fans - JUne 2nd-4th a festival week-end at Sheepy Church focusing on a second world war exhibition - we hope to display lots of photos of the village from that time and memorabilia. Hello Martyn,

Once again I return to you helpful website and note that you are starting a Warwickshire page. As my parental great grandfather was born in Bedworth, I wonder when this page will be available? You very kindly 'found' a great uncle - Frederick Tipper, for me last month.

Excellent site. I was only looking for somewhere to stay in Sheepy Magna to do some research, but I think I've found more from your site than I could from a visit! (I hope the local hostelry doesn't read this.) My Great Grandfather was Robert Hiorns, eldest son of Matthew Hiorns died 1897. Also related to the Frith family. Keep up the good work, I'll be back.

Hi there, I really enjoyed the site. My Great Great Grandparents, John Baldock and Mary Ann nee Mottram came to live in Ratcliffe Culey in around 1878 from the Stockingford area. They lived at Ratcliffe House, I wonder if it still stands? They had 15 children, all of whom survived and one of whom, William, the one who was estranged, is buried in the Church. I took photographs of his grave, and that of his wife Mary Ann nee Garfield about 15 years ago. I am delighted to find this site and will come back periodically to see what new indexes you have added. Thanks! Louise

Sheepy Magna eh! I have many memories of your little village. Born in 1972, lived in Atherstone for my first 2 years before moving to 6 Church Croft, Sheepy. Went to Mrs Cullen's pre-school in Ratcliffe before going through the 5/6 years at Sheepy Magna C of E primary school. My dad helped plant the trees that stand at the entrance to the playing fields as well as the old football hut. What more do you want to know about the place? How long have you been there? There used to be a Nicholas who lived on the coner of Meadow Close? I was there 1972 to 1983 and have very fond memories of growing up in ideallic environment around this village. Let me know if you want to hear more. I'd also be interested in anyone I know still living there. I know the Jones's still have their printing business next to the Church (I helped knock down the old barn for them to build the new building there, they used to have loads of Guinea Pigs!!!). I could go on, but best not. Thanks for the flashback! Let me know if you want to hear more. Now living in Farnham, Surrey.

Hi, Martyn. The site just gets better and better. We have started the Facility Project work now at Ratcliffe Church, introducing toilet and kitchenette facilities into the west end. Maybe signs of some old designs on the west end walls behind the 1980s panelling which has nnow been removed... September 8th/9th Heritage Week-end - ratcliffe Church will be open with some history displays...
